Provisional results for the municipal elections in Misrata have been announced by the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE).
With 89,582 residents registered to votes, there was a 64-percent turnout for the elections on 24 May, one of the highest so far for municipal elections in the country.
The results in the general list (71 candidates):
- Abubaker Al-Mabrouk Mohamed Al-Hareesh (8,320 votes)
- Ali Mohammed Mohamed Ishtewie (5,375)
- Khalifa Mohamed Ahmed Al-Gaweel (4,309)
- Ali Omar Ali Abu Sitah (2,434)
- Mohamed Muftah Abdilsalam Al-Toumi (2,287)
- Mustafa Omar Abdussalam Karwad (2,251)
- Mohamed Muftah Ahmed Ishtewie (2,160)
- Hana Mohamed Al-Hussain Khadoura (18,165)
- Abdulhammed Mohammed Ali Frefar (31,932)
Today there were municipal council elections in Zawia South. There was also a re-run of the elections for the woman’s seat on Jufrah Municipal Council. The decision to hold the poll again was taken because the symbol used by one of the candidates was erroneously attached to another women in the elections.
Meanwhile the head of CCMCE, Otman Gajiji says that so far there are now 30 municipal councils operating fully across the country, with elected mayors in place as a result of municipal elections held between late last year and 20 May 2014.
Out of 103 municipalities across Libya, 74 municipalities have now polled.
