Tunis/Sebha, 26 February 2017:

Sixty inmates at a police prison in Wadi Al-Shatti managed to escape today after when relatives of one of the prisoners attacked the jail to free him.

According to the pro-Beida office of the Libyan news agency LANA, the incident happened two days ago. It is understood that fighting with prison guards broke out as a result of the attack, which led to the captives being able to flee.

Twenty have since been recaptured, a Sebha police source told the Libya Herald.

It is understood at least half of those who were in the prison were accused of serious cases, including murder, robbery and theft.
