A young Amazigh activist has been awarded the 2016 Luxembourg Peace Prize. Asma Khalifa from Libya was chosen as an outstanding peacemaker.

Currently in Istanbul where she is writing a thesis on social movement in Libya, Khalifa was recognised by the Luxembourg prize selectors as a key player promoting peace and conflict resolution.  She has involved herself in these tasks in Syria and Yemen as well as Libya.

As she accepted it, she explained: “ I receive this prize as an acknowledgement of the collective efforts of Amazigh women and youth in attempting to realise peace in Libya”.

Beside her peace work, Khalifa is also a women’s right activist and co-founder of the Tamazight Women’s Movement.
