Tunis, 13 May 2016:

Libya’s cultural heritage must be protected from illegal trafficking and intentional destruction, UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler said today, adding “ Culture is a soft power. It shall be brought high up in the agenda of the ongoing reconciliation process”.

Kobler was speaking at the end of a three-day Tunis conference at which 80 organisations and countries debated ways to protect Libya’s archaeological sites and the treasures in its museums.

Besides Libyans from a range of departments and universities, UNESCO was present along with representatives from INTERPOL, the World Customs Union, the World Bank and the Smithsonian Institution.
