Tripoli, 28 September 2015:

US president Barack Obama has admitted that NATO got it wrong after its intervention in Libya.

Speaking of the lessons to be learnt in reference to action in Syria, Obama said that the US had joined the UN-mandated international coalition to prevent a slaughter.

“Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant, our coalition could have and should have done more to fill a vacuum left behind”.

He indicated that such a lack of support would not occur again with a National Unity government, but then he appeared to broaden that support.  “ We will help any legitimate government as it works to bring the country together” he said.

Given that there remain strong doubts that a new unity government will emerge from the UNSMIL dialogue, Obama may have been suggesting that Washington’s default position would then be to support the internationally-recognised House of Representatives and government in Tobruk and Beida.
