Tripoli, 22 June 2015:
Two young children were dug alive from the rubble of a building that collapsed today in Tripoli. Though shocked and frightened, neither the boy nor girl sustained any serious injury.
Locals used their bare hands to free the children who had been playing outside the building in a side road off 24th December Street. The building had been abandoned and was unoccupied.
Many older structures in the city have been poorly maintained. Following the May 2013 collapse of a 1920’s apartment block in Shara Derna off Shara Omar Muktar in which five people, including a pregnant woman died, the Tripoli Municipality vowed to tackle the problem. Yet the following December, three Egyptians living in a condemned building on Shara Omar Muktar perished when the roof fell in.
