Benghazi, 6 January 2015:

The Libyan National Army (LNA) claims to almost have full control of Benghazi’s Laithi district, which has proved to be a key Ansar Al-Sharia stronghold.

The situation in Laithi was improving and Ansar Al-Sharia now had control of just two streets, head of the Special Forces investigation Department Fadel Al-Hassi told the Libya Herald. He said the area was completely surrounded by LNA forces and that members of Ansar Al-Sharia would soon start to run low on supplies of ammunition and food.

He said he expected that the district would be under full control of the LNA within a matter of days. Residents living in nearby areas reported that, although sporadic fighting could still be heard, heavy clashes had today subsided.
