Kufra, 23 October 2014:

Armed men got away with half a million Libyan dinars on Wednesday morning after attacking a bank delivery truck on the outskirts of Sebha.

The truck was on its way to Sahara Bank in Brak Al-Shatti.

According to a bank employee who asked to remain anonymous, three cars with tinted windows pulled up and a group of masked men with Kalashnikovs jumped out and opened fire on the truck.

One of the police escort vehicles fled the scene, with a policeman inside sustaining an injury.

It is still unknown if the attackers were from Sebha.

A series of armed bank heists have taken place across Libya – a clear sign of the absence of security in the country. Some people suspect that bank staff themselves have played a part in some of the robberies.
