Benghazi, 30 October 2013:

All banks in Sirte have remained closed for a second day, following the theft of LD 53 million that was being transferred to the town’s branch of the Central Bank of Libya.

“The banks were closed yesterday and today,” a local resident told the Libya Herald. “Because of the robbery they don’t have enough money to open.” He added that bank staff were also staging a protest over what had happened.

An armed group intercepted a truck transporting the money in Western Sirte on Monday. The truck was apparently accompanied by just one security vehicle.
