Tripoli, 9 March: Ajdabiya has become the latest town to announce local elections. The leader of the local council has announced that they will take place “within 45 days”.
The decision to hold elections follows the appointment several new members of the town council. This created a major row. There were protests that their selection was illegal because they had not been elected. Others protested that they should have been selected instead. As a result of the chaos, the revised council has not met for over a week.
In the end it has been decided to have elections for the whole council to give it legitimacy.
A commission to oversee the the vote, draw district boundaries within the municipality and decide how many councilors there will be per district is to be set up and members appointed.
